Curling:
We played two games of curling today. Close one
against NWT this morning, and then another loss to Nunavut this afternoon. We
have another long day tomorrow with two more games. The morning BC Game will be
live streaming on TSN.
Judo:
Media interviews for Jacob this morning and then
rest/recover until 3:30 for another practice with Team Saskatchewan. Coach
Aaron hit the pin trading centre. Judo team then cheered as the cross country
skiers got their medals.
Hockey
– Men’s: The Yukon hockey boys had a well-played
game against Newfoundland today. We lost 11-2 but it was great to get a couple
of goals. The boys watched some other games throughout the day and are enjoying
their time here. We play NWT tomorrow at 12:30.
Synchro:
Today was practice day 2 for Synchro. Last chance
to workout before tomorrow’s two events: solo preliminaries and figures. Aside
from some crazy calf muscle cramping, Catherine is feeling good and ready to
perform tomorrow. We got to cheer on Michael Sumner as he competed in one of
his figure skating events tonight. Awesome performances by all!
Table
Tennis: Today in table tennis, the team played over
a dozen matches in round robins. Both the male and female doubles had close
matches against Nunavut but were unable to take the win. In singles, Arcel won
the lone match of the day for Team Yukon by surpassing Nunavut. Tomorrow there
will be a mixed doubles competition going on all day from 9:00 AM until the
early afternoon.
Snowboarding:
Today the snowboard team trained on the groomed
trails at Purden as the park at Tabor Mountain was closed to maintain the snow
until Wednesday when training for Friday’s competition will begin. In the
meantime, the athletes will once again ride Purden on Tuesday to get on snow.
Figure
Skating: It was a practice day for Rachel Pettitt
in the Novice ladies category. Mikayla completed her pre-novice short program
and finished with 24.21 points for a 10th finish out of 19 skaters.
She skated a personal best. Michael Sumner completed his elements level 2 event
and had a strong performance. Tomorrow, Rachel practices from 7:30-8:00AM and
competes in novice ladies from 10:45-12:50. Tomorrow is a practice day for
Mikayla and Michael.
Squash: Today was the first day of the team competition. Yukon men faced two encounters today, against two of the top seeds, Alberta and BC. The matches, although somewhat one-sided, in favour of the opponents, were a delight to watch. Our opponents played with skill and grace, and so did we -- certainly with as much grace if not quite the same level of skill. These two encounters will be the most challenging in the tournament for our men. Tomorrow afternoon at 4:30, they encounter Newfoundland, seeded 11th. We are seeded 10th so it should be a close encounter. Our women, seeded 9th, encountered 12th seed NWT today. Each team has only three players. Yukon athletes Sana Syed, Ava Cairns, and Katrina Dobush each won their respective matches. Katrina's match was particularly suspenseful. She won her first two games, lost the second two, and won the fifth game 15-13 (essentially winning in "overtime"). A thrill to watch. On Tuesday at 2:00, the women encounter top seed Ontario.
