Figure
Skating: Mikayla skated her heart out in her free
program tonight and finished 12th overall. Michael had a strong free
skate and finished 3rd overall. It was a practice day for Rachel and
she will have her free skate event tomorrow at 12:45.
Hockey
– Men’s: The boys had a 10:30 practice. They had
the afternoon off. Some took advantage of the time to cheer on their teammate
in Judo. They all went to watch the Saskatchewan vs. Newfoundland to see who
they would be playing in the placement rounds. They will now once again face
team Newfoundland. They are taking in the festivities this evening as they have
not yet had the chance to enjoy the music and fire works.
Curling:
The girls had the morning off so they did some
shopping and then cheered for their Yukon teammates in squash and judo. They
had a tough game against Saskatchewan and they take on Ontario tomorrow morning
at 9:00.
Judo:
The Judo venue was a packed house today as it was
the first day of competition. It looked like it was the hottest ticket in town
because it was standing room only by the time the matches started. Jacob’s
first match was against Newfoundland and it ended in defeat. He was never able
to engage and was thrown for ippon. In his second match he was much calmer and
used to the crowds, he fought very well against a Saskatchewan judoka, but
again came up short. Overall it was a great learning experience for both Jacob
and Arron so they know where they need to focus on to be ready for nationals.
We ended the day at the Keg for some steak … and a LOT of dessert … too much
dessert … now off to watch A Tribe Called Red.
Table
Tennis: Table tennis crossed over and finished
their doubles competitions with no wins and then began their singles
competition, also unfortunately with no wins. Tomorrow they begin their
relegation matches.
Squash:
The women had two encounters today. In the morning
they lost three straight to a powerful team from Nova Scotia. In the afternoon
they had a similar outcome against Manitoba. The men played a remarkably strong
team from PEI, who won all four matches. Arguably one of the most entertaining
matches of the team event to date saw Mustafa Syed play a spectacular match
against the number one player from PEI, Conner Jinks. Conner may end up being
the top male player of the tournament. These two met once before, four years
ago, at the Canada Games in Halifax. Both have improved tremendously since
their first encounter. Tomorrow it is the women’s turn to play PEI at 9, while
the men face Manitoba at 6:30.
Synchro:
Today we watched synchronized swimming duet
preliminaries, then Catherine had a good workout and solo practice. Tonight, we
look forward to watching the team preliminary event.
Snowboard:
Today, the snowboarders trained at Tabor Mountain
for the first time. They were able to practice slope style and boarder cross.
It was a challenge riding new features at the park here in Prince George and
navigating the icy conditions. One more day of training tomorrow and then
competition begins on Friday.
Cross-Country
Skiing: Today was a practice day for cross country.
The team was out testing wax and checking out the race course for tomorrow.
Tomorrow at 12:15 the women will compete in the 10km mass start and at 1:00 the
men will compete in the 15km mass start. Hannah and Natalie participated in the
morning radio interviews and did an awesome job!
