Wrap Report - Sunday Feb 15

Sunday was great day for Team Yukon here in Prince George.  The weather stabilized, the sun came out, and the team had a strong showing.

Biathlon celebrated the first Team Yukon medal with Nadia Moser clinching a silver medal in the 12.5K biathlon, while teammate Maria Peters pushed through in 21st place.  Team Yukon came out to celebrate Nadia's win with a medal recognition ceremony in the Canada Games Plaza, where the host first nation - Lheidli T'enneh - presented leather carrying pouches to each of the winners.

Men's Curling saw Team Yukon battle Nova Scotia to a loss of 9-3 and a late match against British Columbia saw the men defeated 11-2.  The last rock of the BC game was delivered by Brayden Klassen in true Yukon fashion with a 360 spin and release.

In Speedskating - Michael Ritchie equalled his personal best twice in the day in his heat and final for the 1500m.  Michael wasn't able to qualify for the semi-finals, but still has various competitions to compete in.

The Archery Team had their first official day of competition. Compound and recurve finished their first round of 60 arrows today with 3 Yukon archers recording personal bests in front of a packed house. Tomorrow all four continue with another round of 60 arrows in the elimination round.

A tough lost today for the girls hockey, 14-0 against New Brunswick.  The girls fought hard for every inch on the ice and earned the respect of their opponents.  Maya Oakley faced 72 shots, 36 in the first period alone.  Team Yukon was able to put 6 shots on their goalie.  Tomorrow will see the battle of the north between Yukon and NWT.

Today was the first day of competition for Artistic Gymnastics. Yukon had one athlete in the team competition and therefore could not compete for a team placement as 4 scores are needed. Reena Coyne was our sole survivor and she did us proud as she battled back spasms through her routines. Reena managed to compete on all four events and will return for the individual all around on Tuesday afternoon. Emily King cheered on her teammate and made friends with the other gymnasts since her fractured foot sidelined her from the games. Good thing Emily is only 11 so that she can get another shot at competing for team Yukon.

Freestyle Skiing saw the team compete in the Big Air competitions today.  With improved weather conditions and mild temperatures the team saw Dawn Bohmer finish 16 and Lindsey Boorse finish 20th.  On the men's side Kyran Allan and Niko Rodden pushed through to the finals and finished 4th and 7th respectively.
