Wrap Report - Tuesday Feb 17

Alpine Ski
Tuesday was a day of training and sunshine for our girls. They hit the slopes to practice tight turns and to get the feel of their shorter skis. Tomorrow they race Slalom -fast and furious. The race will have two runs; one morning run and one afternoon run, with a combined time to determine the final placing.

The girls felt like celebrities this afternoon as they got interviewed by Paolo and had to share a bit about themselves and their sport.

They fuelled up with a big dinner tonight and will rest up for an early rise to be on the hill by 8:00am.  It looks like there will be a full race roster with 66 females in tomorrow's slalom, so it will be another challenging day on the slopes with Canada's fastest girls.

Go Yukon Alpine!

Archery

The Archery Team wrapped up its last day of official individual competition today. All four of our archers posted personal bests during the tournament. Corvin Dick competed for a position in the final round unfortunately finished the round tied in third place with only the first two shooters advancing. Nila Helm our compound female shooter was able to increase her personal best by 80 points! Well done Nila. Tomorrow all the archers will be competing in the team event which is a loud and exciting event that is worth experiencing.

Biathlon
Today were the 7.5km Sprints, which consist of 2 shooting bouts, one prone and one standing. Today also saw the girls doing penalty laps for missed shots. The field of 40 women started 30 seconds apart.  Marie Peters finished in 23 third spot in a time of 31:17:8 and a total of 3 penalties laps.

Nadia Moser won the bronze medal in a time of 26.19.4 and a total of 4 penalty laps.

Curling
The boys had a challenging game against PEI today and were defeated 11-4. They were tense early on and that carried on through their game. They needed the win to move on to the semi-finals. It's still possible for the team to advance but they must win their next game and benefit from favourable results in other matches.

Hockey
Today was a practice day for the women. In the morning Emma Morin and Monica Johnson did radio interviews with Yukon media.  After that the girls did a little shopping and cheered on Reena in the Gymnastics events. There was a 1-hour practice and the women took that opportunity to stage a cool picture to represent Canada in the 200 Days To Go countdown for the youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa.

Gymnastics
Today Reena competed in Artistic All Around Female events, which include the floor, vault, uneven bars and beam.  Although struggling with lingering back pains, Reena persevered and completed the preliminary round events. Emily and family along with fellow Team Yukon athletes came out to cheer Reena. Emily suffered a foot injury shortly after arriving in Prince George and will not be competing.

Speed Skating
Michael had the day off today and found himself working on his public relation skills with 4 interviews - CHON FM, CBC, CKRW and with Paolo Gallina as part of Team Yukon's athlete profiles.
