Wrap Report - Wednesday Feb 18

Alpine
Both athletes had a DNF (Did Not Finish) on the morning run in the Slalom races. After suffering a small thumb injury during her practice run, Katie straddled a gate at the top of the course. Sam clipped a gate near the bottom of the course and got spun around and took a spill. Both girls were able to refocus after the frustration of the DNFs in order to focus on Thursday’s event.

Because this race was a one shot only in order to stay in the competition, the Yukon Alpine team spent the remainder of the day cheering on their fellow skiers. Tomorrow’s competition consists of Ski Cross qualifying runs.

Archery
Today was the team competition for both compound and recurve. The team competition was a loud and boisterous event. The noise makers, costumes and elk bugles were out in full force. Team Yukon had a successful archery competition during the Canada Winter Games. We gained a tremendous amount of experience and most of our members were able to post personal bests during the tournament.

Biathlon
Today's biathlon races were the 10km Pursuit - competitors leave every 5 seconds based on their results from the 7.5 sprint race the day before.  They shoot 4 times, twice in the prone position and then followed by twice in the standing position

Nadia Moser having won a bronze the day before was the third competitor to leave. Nadia finished in third position with a ski time of 35.24.6 with 6 penalty shots. Nadia took home a bronze medal.

Marie Peters left in the 23rd position and moved up the ranks to finish 16th position with a ski time of 40.23.1 with 3 penalty shots.

Curling
The boys had a difficult game and fell to New Brunswick 18-0.  It was a learning for the team who now move into the Cross Over games.

Hockey
The women's hockey team came out strong in their rematch against Nfld today allowing only 3 goals in the the first and getting 4 shots on net but 3 penalties in the second period changed the momentum and Nfld took advantage of it, scoring 9 in the second period.  The women re-grouped and came back solid in the third period impressing even the opposition coach.  It was a bruised crew that proudly walked back to the change room.  They will get a rematch against NWT tomorrow at noon.

Speed Skating
Michael competed in the 500m competitions in the Lower Heats and is preparing for the 1000m races on Thursday.
