Aug 7th Wrap Report & Aug 8th Preview

Team Yukon spent the day discovering venues, testing transportation schedules and practicing for upcoming games. In WoodBuffalo fashion the team was treated to a spectacular Opening Ceremony with hi-flying stunts, over 350 performers and stunning pyrotechnics.  Tomorrow is the first full day of competitions and sees a complete schedule for all Yukon teams.

Athletics
The team tested the athlete shuttle service from Noralto to Timberlea community centre.  The team checked out the rubberized blue track and the throwing venue. Some members were in awe of the distances thrown by the other athletes, but were encouraged by the provinces who said we all started like you guys.

Artistic Gymnastics
Practice today and tried to eliminate any rust from our travel, and worked on getting used to a much larger court than we practice on. Opening ceremonies, what a perfect start  Exciting, entertaining, cool, couldn't ask for more.  Tomorrow we play a double-header against gold-medal hopefuls Alberta, then Manitoba. Big challenges ahead:)

Basektball Women's
The team had a good run through at the venue and reviewed our team concepts. The practice helped
the team get used to the court, the rims and the playing environment. Today's schedule was practice, rest and opening ceremonies. Tomorrow the team plays BC at 9 am and then Saskatchewan at 7 pm. It's going to be a tremendous opportunity for the girls to experience high level competition.

Basketball Men's
Practice---tried to eliminate any rust from our travel, and worked on getting used to a much larger court than we practice on. Tomorrow we play a double header against gold-medal hopefuls Alberta, then Manitoba. Big challenges ahead, but the team is confident.

Canoe/Kayak
The canoe/kayak team spent the morning practicing at the Snye and checking out the venue. They also got the to try the kayaks they are borrowing from Manitoba for the games. They spent the afternoon relaxing out at Noralta and resting for tomorrow's event. Competition starts  tomorrow with the k1-1000m at 8am. Our own athlete Andrew Crist is in the very first heat. The k1-500m and and k1-200m also go tomorrow.

Cycling:
Road facilities (time-trials) was previewed.  Courses will advantage strong sprinters.  Time trials will take place tomorrow.

Judo
Today was practice at MacDonald Island with team NWT. Coaches had a meeting & weigh-ins at Noralta.  
Everything is amazing!  Go BIG or go home. Tomorrow, Jacob Melanson competes at MacDonald Island from noon onward.

Tennis
Team Yukon hit the courts for their first practice and matches today with the first round of team competition bering a round robin against Saskatchewan.

Ewan Halliday lost his first match 1-6, 0-6.

Doubles team of Matthias Hoenisch/Alex Roberts lost 2-6, 3-6


Team Yukon faces Manitoba in the morning starting at 10am and BC starting at 1pm.
