August 15 Wrap Report & August 16 Preview

Badminton
The Team Yukon Badminton team had a great three days of competition at the 2015 WCSG. With only 3 male athletes,  the team did not have enough players to win any games in the team competition. However, that didn’t stop the boys from winning 3/4 matches against NWT and some near wins against Nunavut. The provinces proved to be tough competition but the boys played some excellent matches and improved dramatically through out the competition. The Team Yukon boys were definitely the best at diving for the birdie and made some spectacular shots in that
manner. With some of the youngest players in the competition, the 2015 Team Yukon Badminton team will look to use their experience at the 2015 WCSG to improve for future tournaments. Way to go boys!

Swimming
Last day of competition saw Luke finish up he meet with a new personal best in the 200 medley race   In his 100 breast event he finished just short of meeting his best time. All in all this was a great meet to help prepare Luke for the 2017 Canada summer games.  Cassis finishes the competition with 4 new best times gaining two today in the 100 fly a strike she has Ben working hard on and the 200 memory race a new event for cassis and one where she has surprised her coaches recently in  doing well in the event.  Tonight cassis is once again an alternate to the 100 m fly final.

Soccer - Male
The men’s team came to the games with the goal of playing well and keeping their game shape. Both of those goals were met in the first 2 games.  In the third game the teams confidence was high, and they won 2-0, a great finale to the week.  The team was pleased with their performance and had a great week trading pins and making friends from across western Canada.

Soccer - Female
The women’s team was pleased with their overall performance, winning their last game 2-0 over North West Territory. They played aggressively and cohesively and were successful in all aspects of play.  The team enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and met people from all parts of Western Canada

Volleyball - Male
The boys played their most inspired match of the tournament. It was a thrilling affair, involving great team play and dynamic defence. The order of the day was repeated heavy serve receive defence from Max, cat-like dives from Kieran and Adrian, and creative front row ball placement led by Ben, Anshil, Peter and Captain Kyle. Stressed parents and other Yukon fans were going wild!  All three sets were super tight as the prairie boys added more beef and height to their line-up as the games progressed. It would have been great to take a set, but the boys acquitted themselves admirably and did not back down or get discouraged. Hats off on a great effort!

Volleyball - Female
The female team put a great team effort against our northern neighbours but couldn’t quite come up with the win.   Tayla was a consistent and effective libero, and Thea and Mel provided good blocks and hits.

Over the course of these Games, both Yukon volleyball teams have boldly faced opponents who are taller and stronger but in each match, our teams exhibited great efforts and never faltered under the pressure.  They were gracious, respectful, and continually supported each other.
