August 9th Wrap, August 10th Preview

Athletics
Athletics set some more personal bests on the track and in the field events:
  • Kestrel and Jen both pb'd in the long jump
  • Levi, James and Cassel pb'd in the shot put
  • Aidan pb'd in the 800 metre

The team also visited other venues and cheered on team Yukon in their respective sports.

Artistic Gymnastics
The team practiced team spirit and cheered on the Yukon boys at basketball, kayak and athletics. The girls rested up for competition on the 10th and soaked up a good dose of vitamin D in preparation for the coming fall.

Basketball Men's
The men played a close game against NWT. They played very well with an early lead but couldn't stay ahead.
They also had some time to socialize today; enjoying meeting new people. Game against Nunavut on the 10th, and they're looking forward to it.

Basketball Women's
Off day for the team. The girls took advantage of the opportunity to support their fellow athletes in boys' basketball, track and field and canoe/kayak. They even made time to do a little shopping.

Canoe/Kayak
Today saw the Yukon Canoe/Kayak team take the water for the K2-1000m, 500m, and 200m races. It was a hot, sunny day down at Snye Park but our athletes were able to overcome the heat and post multiple personal bests! None of the Yukon k2 teams advanced to the finals but they all gave it their all in their heats. Most of their free time was spent trying to stay cool in the shade and rest up for their next heats. Tomorrow morning August 10th, the Yukon athletes will compete in their final event of the games; the k2 5000m.  The boys race will start at 9:00am and the girls will will start at 9:45. Go Yukon!

Cycling
Road riding is over for the Games and the team put forth a solid effort. August 10th will see the first of two days of mountain biking:
  • Athletes will compete in a 500 metre sprint series called the Eliminator. This is a sprint of 4 riders.
  • The Eliminator will seed all riders for the series of short races where the top 2 finishers move on to the next heat.

Judo
Hannah King won the Team's first medal here at the Games with a Bronze in the individual over 57 kg up to and including 63 kg Female. Way to go Hannah! Shayne and Brandon also competed and delivered a strong performance.

August 10th will see team competition start at 10am.

Volleyball - Beach
Max and Ben continue to become more comfortable as the games continue. In each new game they are making bigger plays. Max had a few huge blocks and Ben hid his defence much better today and as a result made some sweet digs. August 10th the team is looking to hit the 15 point mark against Manitoba. It's definitely possible.
