August 13 Wrap Report & August 14 Preview

Badminton
Today was the first day of competition for the Team Yukon badminton team. They played Alberta and BC, arguably the two strongest teams in the badminton competition. Our three boys weren't able to pull off a win but they got some great points including some spectacular diving plays.  Tomorrow they have a busy day in which they will play three contingents. Let's go boys!

Soccer
The boys team had a difficult game against team BC today.  coach Edgar was very good about outlining what the goals were for the game, and that winning wasn't the main target. The team did a great job with possession, and communication.  The bench played, using all of the teams strengths to its advantage.  It was a disappointing loss, 11-0, but was still one of the best performances by a Yukon Men's Team against a team from BC.

The girls played Manitoba. It was a hard game, with a yellow card being given to one of the opposing players.  The team went 20 minutes with out a goal being scored on them. The two goalies performed tremendously well, and kept the score down, losing 6-0.  The girls were all happy with how they played, and the team was working very well together.

Both teams look forward to their games tomorrow, the boys against Saskatchewan, and the girls against Alberta, at 2 and 3 respectively.

Swimming
Team Yukon swam tonight with cassis Lindsay in the 100 m free. Her goal was to go under a minute which she did with lots of team Yukon members cheering her on.

Luke swam two races the 200 breast and the 400 medley which is 4 lengths of each stroke starting with fly, then back, breast and finish with free.

Tomorrow cassis had the 50m free sprint and Luke has the 400 free middle distance race.

Volleyball Women
Action at the Syncrude Centre began this morning when Team Yukon faced BC.  The girls lost in three sets but improved greatly over the game.  In the afternoon, Team Yukon played the powerhouse Alberta team, losing in 3 sets.  Kate Londero did a good job setting coming for injured setter Mel Moya.  Theo Carey and Paige Bevilacqua did a great job sharing the Libero load all day.  In both games the players demonstrated a great team effort to create rallies and made the other teams fight for every point.

Tomorrow the girls face Manitoba at 11 am and NWT at 2:45 pm. Keep digging girls!!

Volleyball Men
In their first match of the Games, the Team Yukon team put on a fantastic show against Team Manitoba.  In the first set, they were leading at times, much to the delight of the Yukon spectators.  The set ended with the team losing a very close 25 - 22 but we definitely had Manitoba’s attention.  Young Adrian Robinson provided outstanding defence, performing gymnastics to make some amazing returns.

The afternoon pitted the Yukoners against Team Alberta, the team to beat at these Games.  The boys fought hard but lost.  The Alberta boys are tall, fast, and they can hit hard.  Kieran Stacey made some great returns, and Kyle Wallace and Max Clarke had some powerful kills.

Tomorrow the boys face BC at 11 am and Team NWT at 6:30 pm.  Yukon is in the house and we are going to Pound Town!
