August 14 Wrap Report & August 15 Preview

Badminton
Team Yukon badminton had a busy day playing against three contingents, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Northwest Territories.  Both TOBA and SASK were tough battles and Team Yukon wasn't able to take any games.  The boys were able to beat NWT in 3/4 games.  Their first wins of the tournament! Way to go boys.
Tomorrow morning, they will face-off against their last contingent, a strong team from Nunavut.

Male Soccer
The team played a great game against Saskatchewan today.  They battled hard, played with good aggression and drew a few fouls.  Goaltender Seth was
strong and worked hard.  In the end Saskatchewan won 6-0.
The team is looking forward to a great evening game with NWT tomorrow.

Female Soccer
The team battled the mighty Albertans today, a very strong team.  The team was matching their intensity but couldn't hold them off. Alberta won 10-0, but Yukon improved with each touch.
The team is ready to play NWT tomorrow evening.

Swimming
Day two at the aquatic centre saw both swimmers achieving personal bests in their only race today. Luke dropped 11.68 seconds in the 400 freestyle   This is an event that he has chased a PB since early December. Cassis competed in a fast and tough 50 free race today and successfully dropped from a past time of 28 seconds to 27.83 seconds for a new personal best. Bravo to both swimmers.  As our events finished early for the swimmers we travelled to the soccer pitch to catch the boys and girls games. It was wonderful to get out and see a new venue and more of Fort McMurrray. We continue to be amazed with the great facilities and wonderful hospitality.
Tomorrow our last day of Swimmimg will see Luke compete in the 100 breast and cassis in the 100 fly a distance and strike she had been working hard on improving along with both competing in the 200 medley which in non swimmers language is 2 lengths of each stroke starting with fly, back, breast and then free.

Volleyball Women
There was great Yukon volleyball action today beginning with a match between the Yukon women’s team and Manitoba.  The women increasingly improved over the game finished with a strong 16 points in the final set.  Chloe  and Tayla delivered with strong leadership performances.  In the afternoon, the women faced our northern neighbours, NWT. They lost the first two sets in close results and then triumphed in the 3rd with a score of 27 to 25.  Fighting hard, they lost the 4th set with a score of 25 to 18.
Tomorrow, the women will face Saskatchewan.  The team is doing a great job of setting each other up and keeping the energy high for every minute of play.

Volleyball Men
The men’s team faced a tough BC team in their first game of the day. They lost in 3 sets in spite of some great blocks and strong hits.  The players were warmed up for their afternoon game against NWT.  Luka, Mark and Zack carried the team in fine fashion to their first win of the Games.  The Yukon decisively took the first and second set and then the NWT put on the pressure in the 3rd set.  At one point, the score was 23 to 19 in favour of NWT.  The Yukon lads fought back to a 27 to 25 finish…and the crowd went wild!  Good job boys!!
Tomorrow, the men will face Saskatchewan.
